Gone are the days where you’d spend an enormously frustrating amount of time in front of the mirror, trying to replicate one of the many complicating smokey eyed tutorials that are apparently meant to make your life easier, but somehow ends up making you feel absolutely hopelessly inadequate at attempting to recreate this sultry dark eyed goddess look that everybody is raving about!
Now that you’ve watched Heidi’s video on ‘Fresh Face & Natural Makeup‘, it’s time to learn how to go from fresh faced loveliness onto a more glammy evening look. And you know what? You don’t need to spend an hour attempting to blend shadow on your lids, because with Heidi’s simple, easy to follow steps and with some practice, you’ll be ready to go in a flash – we promise!
Traditionally, smokey eye makeup colours consist of black and shades of gray. Remember however, that when choosing your colour/s, to keep in mind the colour of your own eyes as well, as this plays an important role in bringing out the best in your peepers. In addition to the traditional shades, as a rough guide:
· Blue eyed divas should indulge in shades of violet, purple or dark blue eye shadow.
· Green or Hazel eyed beauties should try a deep khaki, dark green, brown, purple or plum color.
· Brown/Dark eyed ladies should definitely have a go at shades of copper, coffee, and brown.
Whilst some people still prefer to use their fingers to blend shadow onto lids, the introduction of a fine collection of brushes for this very purpose eliminates the messy fingers and the transfer of natural oils from your fingertips onto your lids, which will spoil your blending.
In Heidi’s video, you will see that she uses eyeliner in a pot. You too can bid au revoir to your eyeliner pencil, because gel eyeliners or ‘smudgepots’ are creating quite the buzz these days. These little smudge pots come in glass pots with airtight lids that keep the gel soft and pliable. They have an inky intensity makes them an absolute must-have if you’re into the smokey eyed look, because in addition to creating that amazingly sultry look, it lasts longer than regular eyeliner and gives a very polished look. They do take a little bit of practice to perfect however, but the pay-off is amazing.
When applying liner from a pot a little trick is, using your brush to tap into the product and then onto the eye, NOT using the sweeping/sliding type of motions that you would do usually. When tapping into the smudge pot, make sure it is fully covered on the tip, then wipe off the excess on the side of the pot, making sure it doesn’t look clumpy on the brush. If you want a less defined line, then smooth over it with a q-tip or a smudge brush.
