EAT your way to a flat stomach!!

January 30th, 2012
  • OK, you’re right…sit-ups and crunches will give you abs of steel…..BUT choosing the right foods can help tackle the tummy bulge AND that bloated feeling after you have eaten when food is not digested properly.
  •   1.  Choose granary bread (except if you are wheat-intolerant) over white bread – energy is released at a slower pace and the fibre helps regulate your digestive system.
  •   2.  Avocado is full of mono-saturated fat and is shown to prevent the accumulation of tummy fat.
  •   3.  Choose lean protein like fish, skinless chicken and turkey so less fat to sit on your tummy + your body has to BURN calories to digest protein.
  •   4.  You want food to sit in your system for as little time as possible – it must be used as fuel for energy.  Try eating probiotic yoghurt – the enzymes reduce the time between food being eaten and leaving your body so no bloated feeling.
  •    5.  Try whisking-up a fruit smoothie in the morning – the fibre in the fruit will help to speed up your digestive system and get ‘things moving’….so you start your day with a FLAT TUM!!!

50 gems to live by!!! – read and enjoy

December 9th, 2011

Hi, I would like to share these with you, they made me smile, swallow hard, tingle all over and comfort me moving forward……I hope they do the same for you!  xx

A Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist, Regina Brett wrote this on her 45th birthday. When she turned 50 a couple of years ago, she added an additional five gems. I read this quite frequently, and every time I do, I am reminded to slow down. I can’t think of a better time than the holiday season to slow down and enjoy the simple things.

Regina Brett’s 45 life lessons and 5 to grow on:

To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me.

It is the most-requested column I’ve ever written. My odometer rolls over to 50 this week, so here’s an update:

1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.

8. It’s OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present.

12. It’s OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don’t compare your life to others’. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don’t worry; God never blinks.

16. Life is too short for long pity parties. Get busy living, or get busy dying.

17. You can get through anything if you stay put in today.

18. A writer writes. If you want to be a writer, write.

19. It’s never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don’t save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Overprepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: “In five years, will this matter?”

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.

35. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger.

36. Growing old beats the alternative – dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable.

38. Read the Psalms. They cover every human emotion.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.

41. Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

42. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.

43. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

44. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

45. The best is yet to come.

46. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

47. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

48. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

49. Yield.

50. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift.

Accessorize Your Every Mood!

November 22nd, 2011

Accessories can either make or break your look and a common mistake that most girls make is having ‘too much going on’/a cluttered look. Follow my super hot ‘Accessorising Tips’ to add the finishing touches to your look and watch the compliments start flowing in!

* If you want attention on your face and not your hips, wear an interesting necklace/scarf, or ditch your boring black/brown stockings and opt for something trendier that emphasises a great pair of legs. Look out for unusual patterns like these cute octopus or heart shape printed stockings to stand out from the crowd!

* Thumbs down to huge chunky earrings on a smaller face which will only overpower you, but a big YES to thin skinny chains with cute pendants that are more likely to emphasise and flatter a slender neck.

* Create a mood with your accessories. For example, that lovely summery flowery necklace you wore throughout the sunny months is just not going to work with a winter coat no matter how you wear it!

We are absolutely LOVING these ultra cool crayon rings by Timothy Liles! Sold in multiple colour assortments and a universal size range, they will bring out the artsy side in all of us. Sold at  Poketo.

Capsule Wardrobe Essentials

November 7th, 2011

So you’ve unpacked your winter clothes boxes, and think you’re in need of some retail therapy to distract you from the depressing weather and your ho-hum wardrobe? Wait!!! Smart shopping is the key to ensuring you don’t spend a fortune on things you hardly end up wearing and wasting time on exchanges/returns. It’s time for you to invest some time in making your very own ‘capsule wardrobe’.

A capsule wardrobe is nothing more than a collection of clothes that work well together, but can be worn in different ways for multiple occasions. If you think having a capsule wardrobe is dull…think again! Plan your winter capsule wardrobe around two or three neutrals colours (think navy, grey, off white, camel, or black) and one or two accent shades (like dusky green or pale blue). Learn the art of mixing & matching, maximising the amount of outfits you can create with fewer items.

When choosing colours remember also to select colours that flatter your complexion and don’t make you look drab and dull. Believe me it makes a big difference! To do this, clean out your wardrobe and wear each piece you own in front of a mirror. Close your eyes for a second and then open them – does the piece highlight/bring out your best features and makes your skin look amazing? – if you look drab and tired and “not quite right” – get rid of the piece – it isn’t doing you any favours!

Have a look at my ‘Capsule Wardrobe’ video HERE, and if you have any questions on how to start your own, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line!

Undies and Bras for Every Outfit

November 5th, 2011

The perfect outfit begins with pairing it with the appropriate undergarments. Do an undie/bra clean out of your wardrobe and check to see if you’ve got the all important essentials, and check if you need to get some upgrades. Have a look at my fun ‘Undies’ video HERE, where I talk you through the the jungle of undergarments that are available to us.

Remember these top 4 tips when out shopping for bras and underwear:

1. When buying bras – ALWAYS try them on in order to make sure you buy the right size. If you are unsure of your size, the ladies in the lingerie boutiques are trained to measure you in order to ensure you get the right size. Remember that sometimes different brands are sized a little differently, so don’t be shy!

2. Visible underwear is a big tacky no-no! For those low rise jeans opt for low cut briefs/boy shorts. Boy shorts go with almost anything, are comfortable and don’t give you the dreaded VPL or visible panty line.

3. Thongs are good choices if you would like to wear low-rise pants, tight evening dresses or light-colored clothes.

4. And finally coloured/printed undies under white trousers are also a common fashion mistake, avoid at all costs and pair with black undies instead which become invisible.

Are you wearing the Correct Jeans?

November 2nd, 2011

Jeans have been around a long long time and it doesn’t look like they are going anywhere anytime soon. The ultimate fashion victory amongst trends that have disappeared over time, jeans win hands down as that fashion necessity, the absolute must-have, regardless of season. But….are you wearing the right jeans? Nobody has the exact same body shape, its a matter of understanding what your body shape is and finding a pair that follows your curves and fits you.

Hot Tips:

  • Don’t be afraid to play with your look and don’t get stuck in a ‘jeans’ rut – roll up the cuffs, accessorise with a great leather belt or try on another shape for a change, you might be amazed!

  • Dress up your jeans instantly with a pair of heels and and a black or beige tailored boxy jacket. Casual to chic in seconds plus they make your legs look longer!

In my ‘Jeans’ video, I talk of the different types of jeans available and offer tips on how to choose jeans for your body type. Watch video HERE. If you’ve got any questions regarding body types, please feel free to send me a video message! I’m here to answer all your questions.

Bags! Bags! Bags!

October 31st, 2011
Have you EVER actually walked out of your house or apartment and then felt absolutely naked because you’d fogotten not your undies but horror of all horrors – your handbag???!!!! Ladies handbags are such a major accessory in the fashion world today – whether it’s leather, plastic, suede, fabric, prints, jute, sequins, studs or prints, there is one to suit every personality on this planet. A handbag can surprisingly either make or break your outfit, so it’s important to choose well. Have a look at Heidi’s ‘Bags!’ video HERE as she talks about the different types of bags that are out there.
An important tip to remember is that a handbag is a reflection of your personality – be comfortable with the bag you are carrying and pick one that is proportionate to your figure. For example: if you are petite, then you don’t want be weighed down by an oversize tote that weighs you down (as tempting as it is due to the space factor).

Fun fact: Did you know that the length of your bag (where the bottom of the bag hits your body) accentuates whatever part of the body it comes near. If the bottom of your bag ends around the hips, it plays up your hip width as the eye is drawn to the bag. Most women look great with a bag that hits mid-torso because it flatters the waist.

How to have Perfect Skin

October 28th, 2011

We are all born with one of the different skin types and very often most people end up using the wrong skin products that do not correspond to the type of skin type that they have – resulting in spots/breakouts and allergies. Other factors that can affect your skin are weather, your cleansing routine, menstrual  cycle, diet, and even ethnic background.

It is important that you first identify your skin type (oily, dry, combination, sensitive, normal) then purchase a good cleanser/toner/scrub/moisturiser, and get into the habit of maintaining a skin care routine that you should follow religiously.
Watch Heidi’s ‘How to Have Perfect Skin’ video HERE where she shows you how to get started on a routine. In her video she uses AMIE products which  have:  No parabens/mineral-oils/petrochemicals, No animal testing/animal ingredients, and are suitable for vegetarians and vegans. They smell lovely too and are not heavy on the purse!

Treat your Tresses to some TLC

October 27th, 2011
With summer long gone, it’s time to take a real close look at your tresses to ensure that the harsh summery rays haven’t done too much damage – it’s time for some serious hair TLC! While you may often be tempted to cut out conditioning from your hair care routine, Heidi strongly recommends that you should include it to ensure your tresses get that beautiful sleek look by bringing out out its natural shine. Remember though that you should avoid using the conditioner directly on your scalp, and simply apply and massage into the ends of your hair instead. This is especially important if you have oily/greasy hair. Remember to also always rinse with cold water, as this closes the hair cuticles and prevents the dreaded frizz.
Heidi loves the REDKEN range of products, there is something for every hair type and every hair problem. They are not available for sale in supermarkets, but sold only at selected salons that use the product. Well worth the trouble we say!

Get Lashed up this Autumn – Applying the Perfect Set of False Eyelashes

October 24th, 2011

If you’ve got short, skimpy, or non-existent eyelashes, then a set of false eyelashes could be the answer to your worries! The good news is that you can now learn to do them yourself without spending bucketloads at the beauticians to get them done professionally. All you need are the eyelashes, special eyelash glue, some tweezers, a little bit of patience, and of course Heidi’s “How to Apply False Eyelashes” YouTube video which you can watch HERE.

False eyelashes can be bought either as full lashes: which add density to the entire lash line whilst giving you that glamorous wow factor, or individual lashes: which look more natural and can be used to fill in those sparse areas. Whilst full lashes are easier to apply, individual lashes require a steadier hand and some practice.

Sephora have got a great range available from Make up For Ever – whether it’s simply au-natural or downright outrageous (zigzag, feathered, or coloured lashes anyone?!) there are eyelashes to suit all tastes and personalities.
